Travel

Each year AJF organizes a range of activities for its members, including trips to various locations and events. Offering the chance to meet other members, attend events and encounter jewelers and other professionals involved in the field of contemporary art jewelry, these trips are an important way for AJF to create and sustain a community of supporters that, through membership donations, support the field.

AJF In Munich 2012

Munich is known as die stadt der lebensfreude, the city filled with the joy of life – and with the bonus of welcome, sunny weather it was a pleasure to be in the Bavarian capital. The AJF program kicked off when we met on Thursday in the lobby of the luxurious Charles Hotel in the center of town – old friends were re-united and new tour members were greeted, a great start to the first day. more...

AJF Trip 2011: Seattle

As we entered Sally von Bargen's home we were each given a piece of paper with a statement or two on it about someone’s life. For example, one said, ‘I work three jobs besides doing my jewelry.’ We were presented with groupings of work by each jeweler and were asked to place our statement with the jeweler it belonged to. This proved to be a daunting task and most of us got it wrong, but in the ensuing conversation we learned a lot. more...

AJF Trip 2010: London

The Saatchi gallery is in a beautiful, stately building just off King’s Road near Sloane Square. As we entered the high ceilinged rooms, a beautifully diffused light illuminated it all. It was evident that these spaces were made to show off artwork in a particular way. This light was very much of a presence and perhaps even a distraction in viewing the displays, but of course that didn’t stop anyone one from looking. We all scattered to look at the fantastic jewelry and make our decisions about what to add to our collections. more...

AJF Trip 2009: Philadelphia

The AJF trip to Philadelphia in 2009, was our first in conjunction with the SNAG conference and a whole lot of fun. It was a very good group and everyone had a favorite moment. At the conference itself, I think most everyone would agree that Myra Mimlitsch Gray gave the most inspired talk. She got a standing ovation. more...

AJF Trip 2008: New York

Our fabulous New York City trip in October 2008, was centered on the opening of the new building for the Museum of Arts and Design, which was great to see. It has been many years coming, but the results will be felt for a long time. We all agreed that the jewelry section of the building was by far the best part. more...

AJF Trip 2007: Boston

An enthusiastic group of 23 AJF members gathered in Boston in June 2007 to enjoy three days of non-stop, art-jewelry activities.
